Martin Seligman - resilience, mental toughness, positive psychology
Positive psychology at Foresight
Since 1995 Foresight has held the sole New Zealand licence to offer services based on Professor Martin Seligman’s ground-breaking work in positive psychology (see below). These services include:
- Optimism, emotional resilience, and motivation profiling using the Seligman Attributional Style Questionnaire (SASQ). Insights from the SASQ help individuals and organisations make employment decisions, diagnose performance issues and design improvement programmes, design effective coaching programmes, and uncover the origins of depression. They can be applied in employment, sports, academic studies, health and many other areas of life.
- Learning and development programmes, and personal coaching and mentoring to improve motivation, performance and mental toughness.
Professor Martin Seligman, named by the Review of General Psychology as the 13th most cited psychologist of the 20th Century, turned psychology on its head by focusing on what makes us well, rather than what makes us unwell.
More than 1000 studies using Professor Seligman’s work prove that people with an optimistic attitude perform better in most aspects of life, including academic achievement, sales productivity, emotional resilience, immune system strength and even cancer survival.
Professor Seligman is the Fox Leadership Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. His books have been translated into more than 16 languages and his work has been featured on the front page of the New York Times, Time, Newsweek, US News and World Report, and the Reader's Digest.
Professor Seligman has received two Distinguished Scientific Contribution awards from the American Psychological Association, the Laurel Award of the American Association for Applied Psychology and Prevention, and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Society for Research in Psychopathology. He has also received awards from the American Psychological Society for contribution to basic science and for the application of psychological knowledge.
In 1996 Professor Seligman was elected president of the American Psychological Association by the largest vote in modern history. The Foresight Institute has a long-standing relationship with Martin Seligman and his consulting firm in the US, Foresight Inc.
